Tavner Castle
Tavner has been with Transition Projects for over two years, currently serving as a COMPASS Wellness Access Specialist. Outside of work, Tavner loves to spend time with her chocolate lab, Madrona Penny Paw, play the Banjo, and cook southern favorites.
We're so fortunate to have Tavner, and we hope you'll take a minute to learn more about her Transition Projects journey in her own words.
What brought you to Transition Projects?
I joined Transition Projects while living in recovery housing. My lived experience and educational background in Social Justice and Political Economics have given me the skills to work as a peer navigator.
What has your time been like?
I began as an RA at the Laurelwood Center, and after eight months, I secured a temporary position as the COVID Support Supervisor. When my COVID support position ended, I was lucky enough to be referred to the Wellness Access position, where I have been gratefully supporting the health and wellness of the transgender community.
What do Transition Projects and your work here mean to you?
Working at Transition Projects gives me a sense of pride and a greater connection to my community. I can better many families' and individuals' quality of life by establishing primary care services, referring qualifying individuals to SSI/SSDI support services, and connecting folks to specialty care.
I feel a sense of accomplishment when I can sneak someone into the backdoor of a therapist's waitlist or connect someone to a medical provider for a mobility device. It has been a wonderfully gratifying experience to have the opportunity to engage with other trans folks from similar backgrounds and to be a part of their growth and recovery from the streets to housing.
