36th Annual WINTERFOLK – A Benefit for Transition Projects

  • Alberta Rose Theatre 3000 Northeast Alberta Street Portland, OR, 97211 United States (map)

Join us for the 36th Annual Winterfolk – A Benefit for Transition Projects on Saturday, February 1 at the Alberta Rose Theatre.

Oregon's largest annual folk music concert event, Winterfolk, brings the community together in the common celebration of music and caring — and every dollar raised goes to support Transition Projects’ work.

For over 55 years, Transition Projects has delivered life-saving and life changing support to some of Portland’s most vulnerable residents. Winterfolk is proud to partner with this long time organization, working towards one of the most basic human rights.

Meet the Lineup

  • Laurie Lewis has gathered fans and honors for her powerful and emotive voice and versatile, dynamic songwriting for nearly 4 decades. A sought-after recording producer and skilled teacher and mentor, she is an inspiration and a ground-breaker – across genres, geography, and gender barriers – and has shown how a woman can blend into any part of the classic bluegrass singing trio and how a great voice can move fluidly between bluegrass and other types of music. As a fiddler she can emulate the strength and grit of the early bluegrass musicians and appeals to traditional bluegrass audiences, as well as winning acclaim in the worlds of Americana and folk music. “Her voice is a rare combination of grit, grace, strength, and delicacy. Her stories always ring true.” Linda Ronstadt

  • Terry Robb is hailed as a blues guitar virtuoso and one of the finest acoustic guitarists on the international scene. His signature fingerpicking style has earned him international acclaim from worldwide audiences, esteemed music critics and his distinguished peers. Incorporating elements from Delta blues, ragtime, country, swing and jazz, Robb has built a unique blues sound that has made him a legend in his prolific music career spanning four decades. “The matter is clear. Terry Robb is one of our finest acoustic guitarists today.” Living Blues magazine

  • Mary Flower and The BBQ Boys - Flower is a renowned guitar instructor but cannot be narrowly defined – she showcases her talents as a complete artist, deeply versed in an array of styles for which she demonstrates an abiding love that underlies her quietly jaw-dropping technique. “A national treasure in your own back yard.” Jorma Kaukonen

    • The BBQ Boys, a 4-piece Jazz, blues and jug band have performed with Jim Kweskin, Geoff Muldaur, Maria Muldaur, John Sebastian, David Grisman, and Dan Hicks. Originally the Barbecue Orchestra started by famed washtub bass and jug blower Fritz Richmond and Turtle VanDemarr. When Fritz passed away and Turtle joined another band, the remaining members added a sousaphone player, and The BBQ Boys were born. In 2013 they joined with Mary Flower as a jazz and blues band and created new versions of old standbys and originals.

  • Kate Power and Steve Einhorn are two of Portland's most respected and influential musical artists. Known and beloved across the U.S. for their appearances on The Prairie Home Companion, at the Kerrville Folk Festival, and on other prestigious stages, they also made a lasting impact on thousands as proprietors, promoters, and recording and performing artists at Artichoke Music, which continues to carry on their legacy.

  • Kristen Grainger and Dan Wetzel of True North are a bluegrass-leaning Americana powerhouse of terrific songwriting, lush vocals, and great instrumentalists. They have collected many accolades and awards along with Kristen winning Common Ground‘s 2022 Acoustic Roots Songwriting Contest and 2019 Roots Northwest songwriting competition. Their newest project, Fear of Falling Stars, has climbed the charts and is critically acclaimed.

  • Tom May will be hosting and performing and is the founder and director of Winterfolk. He is also the founder and producer of the syndicated radio broadcast River City Folk in its 40th year. Tom has recorded 17 albums and has been a major presence in American Folk Music for 52 years. He will be joined at the concert by the quintessential Portland musicians, guitarist Donny Wright and Matt Snook on banjo and dobro.
